TSPU Student Trade Union is a public organization that protects the rights of students and provides social support to students.

The Trade Union representing the interests of students, maintains and develops the tradition of student social life, helps students in solving educational, social and other issues, assists the university administration in educational and scientific objectives and in the organization of education and training, as well as leisure and everyday life of students.

The main objectives:

• collective representation of students in interaction with the administration of the university, its representatives, public authorities, local government, public and other organizations;
• implementation of goals and tasks of trade union to represent and protect individual and collective rights and interests of students;
• joint coordination of TSPU student organisation to increase the level of training and the quality of education, support initiatives and development of creative potential;
• formation of students’ citizenship and ability to work and live in the modern society.

Main activities:

• monitoring and participation in distribution of budget funds, directly affecting the interests of university students;
• protection of social and economic rights and interests of trade union members of the students;
• organization of leisure of students (discos, competitions, cultural and sports activities, discounted trips to resorts and camps, excursions etc.);

The museum complex of Tomsk State Pedagogical University was established by the order of the rector in 2004. Besides the Museum of History of TSPU, the Museum “Magic World” named after. A.M. Volkov,  Art Gallery of TSPU,  Ethnolinguistic Museum “Russian House in Siberia”. The complex includes eight more specialized audiences faculty museums.

During the last five years at the complex hosted 49 art exhibitions in the Art Gallery, held more than 2000 excursions to the museums, held competitions and activities involving students and residents of Tomsk, developed courses in museum work, issued about 70 publications, reflecting life museums (booklets about art exhibitions, monograph “Unknown A.M.Volkov in letters”, specialized manuals, design contests), as well as several films chronicling the exhibition activities.

The staff of the Museum complex participate in conferences held all over Russia, hold group and individual lessons on the museum and museum practice with local lorefor TSPU students. The “Tour Guides Club” and “The Art School”, organized by the museum staff complex, enjoy the love of the students.

The university is proud of its research history and its worldwide recognised scholars an scientific schools.

Thus the scientific school “Quantum field theory and gravity” (Professor I.L. Buchbinder, P.M. Lavrov, V.V. Obukhov, S.D. Odintsov, I.L. Shapiro, I.M. Schwartzman, V.Y. Epp and others), according to Russian and international specialists, carries out research on a global level. In November 2011, Professor S.D. Odintsov entered the Forbes ranking of the most famous Russian scientists.

Scientific school in the field of mathematics teaching methods in higher and secondary education (Professor E.G. Gelfman, M.A. Kholodnaya ), joined many researchers, teachers of mathematics of pedagogical universities in Russia as well as creative teachers. Their outcomes are widely used in the education systems in many regions of the country.

Profound political, social and economic changes that take place in our country have a serious  impact on various spheres of human life and activity. Today is a very urgent need for continuing education for each person over a lifetime. That is why at the present stage of society development specialists with higher professional pedagogical education are becoming particularly popular.

The main objective of the Tomsk State Pedagogical University is to create an educational environment corresponding to the level of higher international standards of training, bachelor's and master's degrees for a highly educational activities. Established educational environment is focused on training of competitive specialists who are ready to work in the educational institutions of different levels, in research organizations, government agencies, private companies, implementing the knowledge acquired during the period of training.

The main components of the educational environment of TSPU are:

TomskState Pedagogical University is the Centre for Education, Science and Culture, one of the leading educational institutions of Russia. Special attention is given to the international activities of the University.

In 2009 Tomsk State Pedagogical University became the winner of the "hundred best universities in Russia".  The competition was held by the International Academy for Quality and Marketing under the auspices of the Federation Council Committee on Education and Science and the State Duma Committee on Education. Rector of Tomsk State Pedagogical University , Valery V. Tomsk State Pedagogical University has extensive international contacts, established partnerships with such influential international organizations such as the Department of Education of the Council of Europe, the Institute for Research and retraining United Nations (UNITAR), the DAAD, the Institute after Goethe, IREX, the Alliance Francaise , the British Council, Fulbright, American Councils for International Education, the German Academic Exchange Service, the Dutch Institute, the Carnegie Foundation and others. A special place in international relations takes participation of TSPU in a consortium led by the Dresden University of Technology in the framework of the academic mobility "Erasmus Mundus".

The university is implementing various programs of international collaboration with the  foreign universities and organizations. The cooperation with the universities of the Republic of Poland - Wroclaw, Opole and Krakow University. Permanent academic exchanges and mutual interactive lectures over the Internet in real-time physics, chemistry, sociology, English and Spanish TSPU performs with the University of North Carolina, Pembroke (USA).

Collaboration with the University of Indiana is part of a specific project "Cultural Immersion". An agreement was signed between the Department of Theoretical Physics, Tomsk State Pedagogical University and the University of Uestern Case Reserve, Cleveland, Ohio (USA), which introduces a research and exchange of information is carried out .

Concluded international agreements on cooperation in the specialty "Linguistics" with the city of Sardis Science Centre (Canada), University of Belefeld (Germany), University of Rouen (France), with a degree in "Theoretical Physics" - with the universities of Philadelphia (United States), Munich, Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig (Germany), the University of Crete (Greece), Polytechnic Institute, Paris (France, Technical University of Gothenburg (Sweden), University of Utrecht (The Netherlands), Imperial College London(UK), specialty "Polish" - with the Ministry of education of Poland, the field of "Russian as a foreign language", "Polish as a foreign language " with the University of Wroclaw (Poland), specialty "Physical culture and Sport" - with pedagogical university, Mogilev (Belarus), the Institute of Physical Culture in Ulan Bator (Mongolia).

In recent years, there is an active development in cooperation with universities in Japan - Hiroshima University and Ochanomizu University, Tokyo. On the basis of TSPU opened the country's only information booth Hiroshima office of the Institute of Research and Professional Enhancement of the United Nations (UNITAR).

Graduate and undergraduate students leave for probation, in accordance with agreements with foreign universities, universities in Poland, Japan, Norway, China, the U.S., Mongolia, Brazil, Australia, Finland, the UK, France, Spain, Italy and Turkey. It has become an annual tradition to send students for a period of 3-4 months to the U.S. under the "Work and Travel" program and to work as counselors through the offices of the programs.

• According to the rating of Russian universities for scientific achievement (http://reitor.ru/common/img/uploaded/files/R_hirsh.pdf), prepared in 2009 by  the agency ReitOR, Tomsk State Pedagogical University is ranked 12th among all universities in Russia (including all research and federal universities), and 1st among pedagogical universities in the country according to the Hirsch index , which characterizes the relevance, importance and citations of scientific results.
• Rating of scientific publication activity of Russian universities for 2010, prepared by NRU "Higher School of Economics " (NRU HSE, Moscow ) at the request of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation (http://www.hse.ru/org/hse/sc/interg) showed that the Tomsk State pedagogical University ranks 13th among all universities in Russia (including all research and federal universities), and 1st among pedagogical universities of Russia.

• In the National rating of colleges of the Russian Federation for 2010, prepared by the international group "Interfax" and "Radio Moscow » (http://unirating.ru/rating_branch.asp?br=13) in the category of "pedagogical, humanitarian and linguistic universities" Russia Tomsk State Pedagogical University ranked 2nd place  with 99 points, second only to the RSPU named by A. According to the American scientific information base SPIRES professor Odintsov is one of the most cited scientists in the world (the number of references to his work more than 16 thousand). Sergey works at TSPU of internationally recognized scientific school of theoretical physicists, which has the official status of " Leading Scientific Schools of the Russian Federation." Among the co-authors, S.D. Odintsov, Professor of TSPU: I.L. Buchbinder, P.M. Lavrov, V.V. Obukhov, K.E. Osetrin  I.L. Shapiro, as well as many foreign scholars (from Japan, Spain, Norway, etc.).

The scientific activity of the University covers the current trends in basic and applied science, humanities, psychological and pedagogical sciences.

Application procedure

Applicants must submit the following documents:

1. A formal application addressed to the Rector of TSPU (standard form).
2. A documented report of the interview conducted by a prospective academic supervisor. The in terview is aimed at testing the applicant's knowledge and his ability to enter the program during the current academic year (standard form).
3. A personal data sheet certified by the Personnel Department at the applicant's workplace. A photo 4x6 must be attached.
4. A certified copy of the applicant's diploma. For international students, including citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a copy of the diploma or other document of education issued by their state, and a copy of the certificate of its equivalence to the diploma of higher professional education of Russian Federation , issued by the 
   Federal Agency of Russian Federation, must be presented. If the diploma is issued in a name other than the present name of the applicant, a document certifying the change of the name must be produced.
5. A certified copy of a supplement to the diploma presenting the applicant's academic records.
6. A list of publications officially certified (signed and stamped) or scientific essay (no less than 24 pp.) related to the topic of the dissertation.
7. Review of the academic supervisor on the essay (according to five-mark system) or scientific articles related to the topic of the dissertation.

The applicant must show his passport and diploma in person.

Applications and other documents are submitted to Postgraduate Study Department from June 1 till September 10.

Postgraduate entrance exams in a selected specialty, philosophy and a foreign language are held during the period from September 20 till October 20. Entrance exams can be taken only once. Their results are valid until the end of the calendar year. The candidates who passed the examina­tions required for the degree of Ph.D. do not have to take entrance examinations.

Duration

The length of a postgraduate study program is three years, for extra-mural students - four years.

The average tuition is $2,000 - $2,500 per year. .

Thesis Defense/Presentation

<

PhD thesis defense is possible without taking postgraduate course, if the candidate has executed certain amount of research and his dissertation meets the requirements of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
TSPU Dissertation Councils are licensed to award the PhD degree in the following fields of science:

• Theoretical Physics
• Philosophy of Science and Technology
• Religious Studies, Philosophical Anthropology and Philosophy of Culture
• Languages of the Russian Federation Peoples (Nganasan, Selkup, Tatar, Ket, Khanty)
• Historical, Typological and Comparative Linguistics
• General Pedagogy, History of Pedagogy and Education
• Theory and Methods of Education (in Physics, level of general and higher professional education)
• Theory and Methods of Professional Education

A Council takes an application (standard form) of PhD candidate into consideration if the following documents written in Russian are submitted:

•  Curriculum Vitae. A photo 4x6 must be attached;
• a certified copy of the applicant's diploma. For foreign students, including citizens of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a copy of the diploma or other document of education issued by their state, and a copy of the certificate of its equivalence to the diploma of higher professional education of Russian Federation , issued by the Federal Agency of Russian Federation, must be presented*. If the diploma is issued in a name other than the present name of the applicant, a document certifying the change of the name must be produced;
• certification of passing PhD exams on History and Philosophy of Science, one of the foreign languages and a special discipline in the field of research;
• thesis in Russian or English;
• an abstract of the thesis (up to 10 pages);
• conclusions of the supervising organization.

The procedure of thesis defense allows the use of English with consequent interpretation to Russian. The dissertation file is processed in Russian. Upon the completion of thesis defense by the candidate the Academic Council immediately makes its own decision whether to reward the candidate with PhD degree or not. In positive case the decision is subject to be approved by the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC). After that a foreign citizen will be conferred a diploma of state standard in English or Russian issued by HAC.
