HIGH-TECH EQUIPMENT: EXPERIMENTS OF INSTITUTE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Student Scientific Association of the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Cooperation (IFLIC) of the TPSU conducts scientific research in the following areas: methodology of teaching foreign languages, language pictures of the world (comparative studies, studies of Turkic languages of South Siberia).

Some students are bilingual, that is, they speak two languages since childhood. At the Institute, they study two foreign languages and often notice that words in different languages may have similar spellings but are pronounced differently, otherwise an accent can arise that leads to misunderstanding.

The students decided to find out why the pronunciation of their native, second and foreign language is different. To reduce subjective perception, they used high-tech equipment. Mobile device Articulate Assistant Micro, designed for experimental-phonetic research, can make ultrasound imaging of the tongue from tip to root.

The project was supervised by Valeria Mikhailovna Lemskaya, deputy director for science and development at the Institute of the IFLIC, and Denis Mikhailovich Tokmashev, associate professor at the Department of English Philology and Intercultural Communication.

"Ultrasound pronunciation shows changes in the position of the mobile organs of speech in dynamics - whether a tongue works at the moment of pronunciation, whether it moves backward, whether it is tense, whether a soft palate moves. The recording shows which part of the tongue is working at any given moment of sound production", — explains D.M. Tokmashev.

In an experiment with bilingual students from Tuva, it was found that Russian, English, and Tuvan words with the same form are not pronounced in the same way. Thus, Tuvinian pronunciation differs in the greater degree of tension of the tongue, larynx, and soft palate. This is not the case in Russian. In English pronunciation, the tongue may be tense, but not the larynx. In addition, Tuvinian long vowels are distinguished by delayed tongue tension when the pronunciation of a vowel is lengthened.

During the experiment, it was found that some words in the Tuvan language are pronounced differently by native speakers. In some cases, vowels are pronounced briefly, while in others they are lengthened, and this is accompanied by a change in the position of the tongue and the degree of its rise. The experts of the Institute also noted a smoothing of the articulation in some speakers, "elevation" of the mobile organs of speech, first of all the tongue. All these observations were made possible precisely with the use of high-tech ultrasound imaging equipment.

"There has long been a stereotype in society that high-tech equipment is used only in technical science research. IFLIC breaks stereotypes and demonstrates that today high-tech equipment should also be used in the humanities, in particular in language research and teaching of foreign languages. Among other things, the use of such equipment stimulates students' interest in participating in research activities," says Anna Gennadyevna Bogdanova, Director of the Institute of IFLIC.

The intermediate results of the experiment were made into two videos and submitted for the All-Russian contest held by the National Research Technological University. And the student scientific association of IFLIC expressed its intention to continue its research.

IT-developments of the TSPU and TSU for education of visually impaired children are transferred to the boarding school

The boarding school for students with visual impairments received Raspberry Pi computers with the LUWRAIN non-visual application platform, developed jointly by the specialists of the TSPU and TSU.

The computers will help to create an informational and educational complex capable of supplementing the traditional Braille-based methodology.

"There is not enough time for students who use tactile writing system: a blind student has an opportunity to learn using educational materials and books written in tactile writing system and audio books. However, it is often inaccessible, because students do not have the opportunity to purchase Braille publications on their own (it is possible only in special libraries), which complicates the learning process, and the educational information often does not match the one contained in modern materials. Thus, students with special educational needs find themselves in unequal conditions with other students", — says Natalia Anatolievna Medova, head of the Department of Defectology at TSPU, expert of the LUWRAIN project.

The computers were handed over to the educational institution by Mikhail Sergeevich Pozhidaev, candidate of technical sciences and associate professor at the TSU:

"We live in the age of information technology, when there is a great desire to learn how to apply these technologies to solve the problems faced by visually impaired children in the learning process. Today, these devices are working in experimental mode, but I believe that they will be the beginning of a big undertaking and will help children learn under equal conditions".

As Mikhail Sergeyevich points out, the software set allows using ready-made components with open source code to create the applications necessary in the educational process of children with visual impairments. Only free components are used in the work, which remain available for use in Russia after the introduction of economic and trade restrictions by foreign commercial companies.

On the part of the educational organization the project is supervised by the teacher of biology Svetlana Mikhailovna Mikhailova:

"These computers will play a very important role in mastering the material by visually impaired students on a par with their classmates. Obviously, such an aid as innovative educational materials will make teaching the children many times easier, and the teachers' work will be more automated. We'll begin our acquaintance with computers with the biology textbook, and we hope that in the future it will be possible to study other subjects in this format".

The Raspberry Pi single-board computers that have been given to the boarding school students are inexpensive devices made by the British company Raspberry Pi Foundation, which remain affordable in the face of new restrictions. According to the Kommersant newspaper, there is currently an increased demand for computers of this type. Each kit includes the device itself in a metal case, a wireless keyboard, a power supply and headphones. Each set has a tentative cost of ten thousand rubles.

After the effectiveness on a simple task, such as working with literature in DAISY format, it will be possible to talk about expanding the set of applications by adding the necessary tools. Ready-made components, accompanied by pedagogical methodology of their application, can be distributed in the future to other correctional educational institutions in Russia and for use in inclusive education.

"MORE THAN A TRIP"

Student activists from the Center for Educational Work and Youth Policy at TSPU traveled to St. Petersburg to participate in the "More Than a Journey" program

In St.-Petersburg the guys participated in the cultural tour, which merged stories about the city on the Neva, its palaces and emperors and the life of legendary architects. During the visit to the oldest in Russia jewelry factory "Russkie Samotsvety" students themselves created their own ornaments.

"St. Petersburg is a dream city in every sense. Every step in it is imbued with culture, the unity of completely different European styles with Russian charm is striking. I am absolutely delighted with such an opportunity, provided by our university", - said Milana Kitsanova, a student of the Institute of Childhood and Art Pedagogy.

Traditional presentation of the excursion tour is combined with modern interactive forms. With the help of virtual reality glasses the participants immersed themselves in St. Petersburg of different eras, being practically in the same place. St. Isaac's Cathedral left everyone impressed: the students of the TSPU noted the historical power, talent and strength of the artists who are reflected in this greatest domed structure.

During these days, the Pedagogical Team had time to visit more than 10 different locations, including the Fabergé Museum, the evening city tour "Lights of the Night City," the parades and courtyards of the Northern Capital and others.

"It is not for nothing they say that St. Petersburg holds the history of our country. Each building cherishes a centuries-old culture. The city opened its doors to me for the first time, delighting me on sunny days and astounding me at night. Peter impressed me with its bird's-eye views and walks through ordinary courtyards", — said Prokhor Matveev, a student of History and Philology Department.

OVER 14,000 VOLUNTEERS FROM PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITIES  HELP FAMILIES AND STUDENTS FROM THE DPR AND LPR

In Russia, student volunteers from pedagogical universities and colleges provide support to families and students arriving from the Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic.

Educational psychologists provide psychological assistance. This was announced by Russian Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov.

"Schooling is an important issue, but not the only one. About 14 thousand of our volunteers are now working in the temporary accommodation points. These are students of pedagogical universities and colleges (850 and more than 12 thousand people, respectively). They organize events, excursions, master classes, trying to occupy children, fill their leisure time. Make them feel that they are in a hospitable brotherly country. In addition, it is important for Russian schoolchildren. Studying together with children from Donbass, they get first-hand information about the eight-year war", - said the Minister of Education of Russia Sergey Kravtsov.

The Minister stressed that college students are involved in the collection of humanitarian aid, 405 such centers created on the basis of secondary vocational education institutions, united by the action "We are together."

"Already more than a thousand teachers-psychologists have joined in. Their help is really needed by many. People call hotlines for parents and children from Donbass. Volunteer students also assist psychologists," — he added.

For example, a team of students from Lipetsk State Pedagogical University under the leadership of Dmitry Borisovich Nasonov, vice-rector for educational and youth policy, is now in Lipetsk on an analytical and educational mission. Volunteers have already met with fellow activists, teachers of the Lipetsk State Pedagogical University, visited a tour of the university and started working with refugees.

THE TEACHING PROFESSION TOOK THE THIRD PLACE IN DEMAND AMONG UNIVERSITY ENTRANTS

The pedagogical education is in the top three leading areas, which choose the applicants. The data on results of admission are presented in the research of the National research university "The Higher School of Economics".

In 2021, the most demanded areas were "Healthcare", "Computer Science and Engineering", "Teacher Education", "Jurisprudence" and "Economics". For the first time, the number of potential teachers exceeded the number of those who applied for legal specialties. In the past two years alone, enrollment in the Education and Education Sciences program has grown by nearly 10,000 (66,587 in 2020; 75,677 in 2021; 75,788 in 2022).

"We see that the word 'educator' is increasingly associated with the word 'prestige' among today's youth. And it's important to us that all the kids who choose this path have confidence in their future, in their place of work, that they have a comfortable entrance into the profession. And all our initiatives and programs to support teachers and teacher education are aimed at this, — said Minister of Education of Russia Sergey Kravtsov. — It is not unimportant that following the growth of popularity, the quality of admission also grows".

Yaroslav Kuzminov, the head of the monitoring, also noted the special role of the popularity of the direction "Pedagogical education":

"Employers should know that excellent students now choose medicine and information technology; economists and lawyers are mostly people who got B. These groups are the same quality applicants as future teachers. The growth of the reputation of the direction "Pedagogical education" in the past ten years is one of the most significant changes both in Russian higher education and in the labor market."

Within the framework of the Ministry of Education of Russia project "Teacher of the Future Generation of Russia" modernization of pedagogical universities in terms of both conditions and training programs and professional development of the teaching staff is taking place. It allows to significantly improve the quality of training of teachers who in the near future will come to work in schools. Almost 5 billion rubles are allocated for these purposes in 2021.

RECONSTRUCTION - TO EDUCATE PATRIOTISM: A NEW EXPERIMENTAL PLATFORM STARTED AT TOMSK STATE PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY

On the basis of the Tomsk Pedagogical University a new project "Youth self-organization in the field of historical reconstruction" was launched. The leader of the project Balabaev Gleb Igorevich, an expert of the Department of patriotic education of youth.

"The project was born out of a long cooperation between the TSPU and the club of historical fencing and reconstruction "Chimera". We had an idea to address the educational work through reconstruction", — says Gleb.

The experimental site will become a new unique form of interaction between the Faculty of History and Philology, the Department of Youth Patriotic Education of Tomsk State Pedagogical University, and Tomsk organizations. The creators of the project already have a plan of open lessons and workshops in fencing, experimental archeology, reconstruction.

"The experience of historical reconstructions shows that students live through a certain period of history and evaluate it correctly. Historical reconstruction promotes patriotism, love for the Motherland and their people, increases interest in the historical past, fosters respect for the iconic figures for the history of the country", — notes Galina Nikolaevna Ivaschenko, teacher of history and local history "Elan Agrarian College".

Not only students of the TSPU, but also everyone can participate in the work of the platform. Its activities are based on scientific analysis of the latest achievements of the theory and practice of educational work.

"These are new methods that history teachers will be able to apply to their lessons, this and the translation of history through experimentation. To conduct classes for the participants of the experimental site will be professionals with many years of experience - representatives of reconstruction clubs of Tomsk", — says the head of the project.

Those wishing to join the work must undergo special safety instructions and provide medical certificates confirming the absence of contraindications to physical education and sports. After leaving the distance mode (after February 28), meetings within the framework of the site will be held on the basis of TSPU, and meanwhile, experts hold activities for schoolchildren in small groups.

STEP FORWARD: "TSPU DANCE THEATER" TOOK THE FIRST PLACE IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEST

The creative association "TSPU Dance Theatre" won at the International Festival-competition of arts "Revival" (Moscow, St. Petersburg).

The contest was held extramurally, therefore, it was necessary to send a video with the performance of the number. Head of the Department of World Art Culture and Choreography of the TSPU Timoshenko Larisa Grigorievna, head of the team sent the video with the dance "Soul of a Warrior", which was prepared and performed by students of 3-5 courses of the department.

"Our dance is about the struggle with yourself, about a strong personality. In our choreography, we showed that there are ups and downs, but no matter what, you should not give up and stop halfway, you should only move forward, to your goal, to your dream!" - says Veronica Lapina, a member of the dance team.

As a prop, the dancers chose a familiar object that can be easily used on stage - a chair. It not only served as a backdrop but also helped in creating stunt elements to demonstrate the different levels of choreography. In addition, the chair is a very handy prop that can be transported and always used at competitions, no matter where they take place.

All of the dancers in the group have been involved in dance since childhood. Choreography has grown into a wonderful creative profession, requiring a constant stream of inspiration. The girls draw their strength and ideas from everything that surrounds them: mainly, of course, from their colleagues, who push them to develop further.

"When they say that two heads are better than one — it's about us! We are all different, individuals, which helps a lot in the process when everyone can contribute something different, and it will definitely be taken into account. We try to be each other's helpers and support each other", - says Veronica.
