So, Kristen, where are you from?
I’m from the United States. Specifically, I live in the town of Pella, in the state of Iowa.
Can you tell us a little bit about your town? Is it similar to Tomsk?
Pella has a population of about 10,000 people, so it’s a lot smaller than Tomsk. Pella is famous for its Dutch heritage, which is still an integral part of life in the town. Most buildings in Pella are built in the Dutch style, and we even have a traditional Dutch windmill that grinds grain into flour (the largest in the United States)! Every May we have a festival called “Tulip Time,” and thousands of tourists come from around the country to see our celebration. There are hundreds of thousands of tulips in bloom all over town, and many people dress in Dutch costumes. There are parades and dances and lots of great things to eat!
That sounds like a lot of fun. So, is this your first time in Russia?
No, it’s not my first time in Russia, or my first time in Tomsk. My first visit to Russia was in 2011, when I studied in Irkutsk for five months. During that time, I took a trip around Siberia and even spent a few days in Tomsk! I returned to Russia again in March of 2012, and spent two weeks in Moscow exploring the setting of Master and Margarita. I’m excited to be in Russia for a third time, and especially happy to be back in Siberia.
What do you like to do in your free time?
One of my favorite things to do is to write letters. I love picking out stationery and stamps and envelopes and writing to my friends and family. I also love to dance and to swim. In college I was part of a modern dance group, and I hope to find somewhere to dance here in Tomsk.
What’s your favorite holiday?
My favorite holiday is definitely Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving because it’s a wonderful time to eat delicious food and spend time with friends and family. On Thanksgiving, my family and I wake up early to eat sticky buns and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. After the parade we start to cook all the dishes for dinner – turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, crescent rolls, peas and onions, and pumpkin pie. Once everything is ready, we sit down to eat and enjoy a nice long meal. Afterwards, we usually play cards or a board game.
Do you miss anything about the United States?
Of course I miss my friends and family, but it’s easy enough to keep in touch with them with email, skype, and letters. I miss some foods from the US, but I’ve been experimenting with making things here, and so far it’s been successful. I’ve already made two delicious batches of chocolate chip cookies!
Wonderful. Thanks for talking to us today.
No problem. I’m looking forward to an exciting year in Tomsk!
