TSPU Celebrates Knowledge Day

September 1 was a big day at Tomsk State Pedagogical University. Here’s how the university welcomed its new students!

The celebrations began with a ceremony at the «My First Teacher» monument. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the university’s faculties and student organizations, heads of educational institutions, TSPU Rector Andrey Makarenko, and representatives of the Tomsk Region Department of Education, including its head and TSPU alumnus Yuri Kalinyuk.

Then followed the welcoming ceremonies for first-year bachelor’s, specialist, and master’s students. Afterwards, students took tours of the university campus and learned more about its facilities and infrastructure.

The faculties also held meetings with their deans’ offices, giving students an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about university life. At the Institute of Childhood and Art Pedagogy, for example, students took part in an open-mic session with Institute Director Irina Drozdetskaya.

The day ended with the traditional «Break into the teaching  profession» festival, where first-year students had a chance to discover the university’s student organizations, try out different activities, and enjoy a concert. TSPU Rector Andrey Makarenko addressed the students, along with several distinguished guests: Lyudmila Ogorodova, Deputy Governor of the Tomsk Region for Science and Technological Development; TSPU alumni Ilya Leontiev, First Deputy Chairman of the Tomsk City Duma; Konstantin Lanevsky, Regional Manager of Alfa-Bank; Dmitry Nasonov, Chairman of the Tomsk Region Council of the Movement of the First; and Dmitry Pokrovsky, Chairman of the Russian Union of Youth.

The festival is not only a bright highlight of the annual Knowledge Day celebrations, but also gives students an opportunity to become part of the university’s educational and extracurricular environment. According to the Russian Ministry of Education’s policy, this is an important part of preparing future teachers.
